From what I gathered, its always acceptable to be formal and just use watashi. The issue for guys is you will need to be careful what other phrases you use with it since mis-matching informal phrases with watashi will confuse the reader/listener as you may start some gender confusion. In most settings formal is acceptable, but as you are with friends less formal is preferred, but can vary based on how close the friends are.

In informal situations or in formal for males its Watashi and informal situations Boku. Boku may be used in formal and informal situations. Women may use Watashi for both formal and informal situations.

yuuta san this is what i have decided:
i'm female so i'll use watashi.. it could be used in formaly/keigo and informally, it is so convinient. however if i am a male i'll want to use boku… yuuta san said that it's more polite than ore and its somewhat casual so if i'm with friends i'll definitely use boku.

mina konnichiwa! watashi wa cesca desu.

OMG This is my first lesson and I already feel overwhelmed. What is keigo, and why are there so many words for I? I just want to watch anime without reading subtitles. =o/

I'm a teenage girl so I would rather say watashi (sorry if I spelt it wrong) I'm glad I found this as I have trouble learning stuff like this and remembering it's been a while since I watced this video and I remember it but I'm worried about something. When I speak Japanese would I need to have a little accent or just how I would Normally say it? I'm not trying to offend anyone by this comment but I would like to go abroad and not make a fool out of my self.

As a white mid thirties male, my Japanese teachers always told me not to use "boku" because it sounds childish. I think that's because it just doesn't fit with my personality and the way I look (I look a bit older than my actual age)… and as a foreigner, using "ore" sounds too aggressive and intimidating. So I just say watashi… but to be honest, Japanese isn't like English – I very rarely ever need to say "I" or "watashi" in Japanese, it is normally clear from context that I am referring to myself.

Also, I have had to use "watakushi" in extremely formal/traditional situations.

Being female I would say watashi. Also, is the Japanese text kanji or hiragana what's the difference between them? Please let me know about the premium course if it's available. Thank you!!
